The health care industry is expanding quickly and is in need of qualified workers in all areas. The industry is predicted to add nearly 4 million new jobs between 2006 and 2016 and have the fastest annual growth rate of all the sectors.

As the country's population ages (especially the baby boomer generation), there is a rising need to fill essential positions such as radiology technicians, home health aides, respiratory therapists and registered nurses, just to name a few. Health care is one of the largest industries in the country and no matter the region or community, the need for skilled workers is likely to exist. The industry offers many career paths in addition to the clinical-or medical side-such as administrative, food service, laboratory, and rehabilitation.

Registered Apprenticeship

The Registered Apprenticeship model is well suited to many occupations in healthcare. The model helps participants attain high performance through a cohesive process which links formal instruction in the form of a degree or certification with on-the-job learning (OJL), guided by a mentor. The apprentice goes through a structured program established by the employer that includes incremental wage increases until he or she completes the course of training.

How It Works in Health Care

The basic components of the apprenticeship model are suitable to many occupations in health care. In fact, many health care occupations currently use the apprenticeship model for training without calling it that.

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
Medical Laboratory Technician
Medical Secretary
Medical Transcriptionists
Nurse, Licensed Practical

Optician
Orthodontic Technician
Orthotics Technician
Orthotist
Paramedic
Pharmacist Assistant
Pharmacy Technician
Podiatric Assistant
Prosthetics Technician
Surgical Technologist

The Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL) is developing pilot programs in conjunction with leading healthcare providers in apprenticeship for Certified Nursing Assistant (C.N.A.), Licensed Practical Nurse (L.P.N.) and associated career ladders or lattices that can lead to Registered Nurse (R.N.), among other occupations. Those providers include: the Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society, Adventist HealthCare, Harris County (TX) Hospital District, Jewish Council for the Elderly, The Renaissance at South Shore, University of Chicago Hospital System, Genesis Healthcare Corporation, and SunBridge Healthcare Corporation.
